TONNEAU COVER
Tonneau is a section of a vehicle or truck that is open at the top. It can be used for cargo or passengers. In modern automotive terminology, a Tonneau cover is what covers the back of a pickup truck. It protects the load and improves aerodynamics. Tonneau covers can be folded, retracted, tilted open or locked closed. Steel, aluminum and canvas are all common materials for a Tonneau cover.
A Tonneau cover can also be used to protect and cover open areas on boats. These covers are often made from waterproof canvas and secured by snaps. Original Tonneau covers, which were older and more durable; were used to protect the passenger seats of convertibles and roadsters, as well as the cargo bed in a pickup truck. Hard Tonneau covers can be opened by a hinge or folding mechanism, while segmented and soft covers can be opened by rolling up or folding.
A Tonneau cover keeps items safe from the sun and the stealing eyes of thieves. The first Tonneau cover was an open rear passenger compartment that was rounded like a barrel. The hinged door was the norm for an early Tonneau cover; but dual and single side doors were soon invented. If the street was muddy or otherwise unclean, it could be pulled to the curb and passengers with a Tonneau cover car could get out directly onto the sidewalk.
Tonneau covers can be used on pickup trucks and coupe utility cars to secure the cargo tray. They come in many styles. They can be classified by material; meaning either soft or hard covers. Soft covers CAN be folded or rolled while hard covers can NOT be folded but they can be rolled.
A Roll-up Tonneau cover is made of vinyl or cloth. It uses a rib structure to support the fabric and keep them taut. Snap-based systems are also available, but they are less popular due to truck owners not wanting the snaps to be installed on their vehicles. They typically require drilling or permanent adhesive.
Roll-up Tonneau covers can be opened by rolling the cover toward the truck's cab. Hard roll-up Tonneau covers are firmer than regular roll up covers. These covers are made up of aluminum slats that are covered with vinyl. These aluminum slats are unrolled and form an aluminum shell that covers your cargo and can support loads upwards of 400 pounds.
A retractable truck bed Tonneau cover is another option. It is attached at the front and sides and retracts or rolls up from the tailgate towards your cab. Retractable Tonneau covers are typically made from vinyl, plastic, or aluminum. Because they are usually more secure than soft covers, and they are typically more durable, they are also easier to install.
These covers can be made from hard plastic, fiberglass, or aluminum Tonneau covers. They can be painted to match your truck and are strong in construction. A Tonneau cover can be heavy and need gas struts for opening and closing. These covers function much like a vehicle's roof, opening typically from the tailgate of the bed (backward to front). Some compartments can open from the side or rise vertically. Others have multiple compartments. As an option for new vehicles, some manufacturers offer fiberglass, hard plastic or aluminum Tonneau covers.
Tonneau covers are claimed to improve gas mileage as they streamline the truck’s aerodynamics. The aerodynamics of the pickup bed are helped by the presence of air currents. However, scientific tests have shown that a Tonneau cover traveling at speeds below 70 mph (110 km/h) does not improve mileage. Similar results can be seen when the tailgate opens and the mileage drops.
To protect the rear seats, early open-bodied touring-type cars used a Tonneau cover. In search of an extra competitive edge, car racers used to skin their roadsters with removable canvas. This was as early as the 1930s. These skins covered gaps in the cockpits, which would have disrupted airflow and created undue drag. Tonneau-equipped cars were therefore more efficient with the same amount of power.
For open-top sports cars like the Porsche Boxster and MG, Triumph, or Austin-Healey, you can get a Tonneau cover. These covers are often made from natural or artificial leather and cover the entire passenger compartment. They can also be zippered to allow the driver's seat to be exposed while keeping the interior covered. Tonneau covers can be used instead of hard or soft convertible tops.
A Tonneau cover is a popular accessory for pickup trucks for good reason! They protect your truck bed from the elements. They also provide security by hiding valuable cargo thus keeping it out of view.
